Taxi in Prague
The city of Prague has one of the highest numbers of taxis per resident. There are approximately 16,000 active taxis and ride-sharing vehicles operating in Prague as of 2025. Prague is overloaded with taxis, especially in the city center. The good news is that wherever you are, you usually never have to wait more than a few minutes.
You also usually don’t need to book a taxi in advance (except for a few situations – you will find these later in the text below). In many cases it is a good idea to use public transport, because you will often arrive faster. Please check this article about public transport Prague public transport – Prague BnB
You will find many taxis waiting at the airport and at the main train station, so there is no need to search for them or call them. Otherwise, it is a good idea to download one of the taxi apps.
Taxi Prices and Requirements
Taxis in Prague are really cheap compared to other European cities and are very reliable. Prices are limited by the city to 36 CZK per km + 60 CZK starting fee for a REGULAR taxi (which all the companies must follow). Because of this, you can easily calculate the approximate price in advance and nothing should surprise you.
Luxury or larger cars may have higher prices. Prague airport taxis are also more expensive, but they usually provide much better service – good cars, polite drivers who speak English, who wait for you after arrival and help you with your luggage. There are also private transfer companies or private shuttle services, where the price can also be higher than the city limit. When it comes to payment, you can choose from several payment method options:
- cash (czech crowns)
- cashless payment (debit card)
- Apple pay / Google pay
Payment in euros or dollars is usually not accepted. If so then bear in mind that the exchange rate is not in your favor or you can easily be shortchanged when using Euros.
Taxis should have a visible yellow sign on the car with the word taxi. Having a taximeter and a roof light is no longer required. The driver must give the customer a printed receipt or an electronic version after the ride.
Taxi Scams
Prague once had big problems with dishonest taxi drivers who charged very high prices and cheated tourists. In recent years the situation has completely changed, but it is still good to be careful. Never take a taxi on the street! If for some reason you have to do so, always agree with the driver on the price to the final destination before the ride.
Taxi Companies
There are many taxi companies operating in Prague with different quality and prices. Let’s look together at the most well-known ones.
LIFTAGO
Liftago is a purely Czech company and it is different from its competitors (Uber, Bolt) mainly because all drivers working for this company have a taxi license. They are therefore professional drivers.
The company focuses strongly on quality, safety, and clean, high-quality cars. Drivers are mostly Czech, they know Prague well, use a taximeter, and have taxi signs on the roof of the car. Currently, the company operates in 15 Czech cities. They provide the best experiences for customers and are often advised for travelers who want peace of mind. The car usually arrives within about 6 minutes after ordering.
Liftago is slightly more expensive than the competition, but they offer better services. In the Liftago app, you send a request and can choose from several offers. Then it is up to you whether you select a driver with the best rating, the best price, or a specific type of car. After the ride you can rate the driver. With Liftago, you can also order an airport transfer, a car for up to 7 passengers, an electric vehicle, or a car with a child seat. Payment is possible in cash, by card, or with Apple Pay / Google Pay.

BOLT
Bolt is an Estonian transport platform founded in 2013. It operates in 50 countries across Europe and has more than 200 million customers. In the Czech Republic it quickly became popular, mainly because of its low prices and wide availability. Besides Prague, it operates in more than 30 larger and smaller cities. In addition to passenger transport, it also offers services such as food delivery, scooter and e-bike rentals, car sharing, grocery delivery, and restaurant delivery.
Rides are ordered through a simple mobile app. It is possible to reserve a ride up to 3 months in advance or order it at the last minute. Prices change depending on time, vehicle availability, and demand. However, once you order the car, the price is locked.
The disadvantage of this taxi service is that you cannot choose the driver. The only exception is the option to choose a female driver, which many women traveling alone may appreciate. The quality of drivers is sometimes not very good. Many do not have a license; they are often foreigners and sometimes do not speak Czech or English well and may not know Prague very well.
Payment is possible by card in the app, cash, or Apple Pay / Google Pay.

UBER
Uber operates in the Czech Republic mainly in large cities. In Prague it has been running for more than 10 years and, unlike in some countries where it was banned, it is completely legal here.
Like Bolt, it is ordered through an app. Prices are low and change depending on demand and current availability, but you will know the price before the ride starts. If you want to save money and don’t mind sharing a car with someone else, you can order a share ride ( UberX) . These rides are usually the cheapest.
Uber does not have as many cars as Bolt, so the arrival of a car may sometimes take a little longer (but we are still talking about just a few minutes). Uber drivers are often slightly better, although many of them are also foreigners and some may not have an official license. You cannot choose the driver.
You can order a ride in advance or at the last minute. Official Uber taxis can be found at the airport (Václav Havel airport Prague) and of course all around the city center. At the airport, the quality of drivers and cars is usually better than elsewhere.
Uber also offers larger cars for more passengers, cars for traveling with pets, and premium services such as Uber Comfort or Uber Black (first class cars and drivers for a maximum comfort).
Payment can be made by card in the app or cash.

AAA TAXI
AAA Taxi is one of the biggest official taxi companies and has been on the Czech market for more than 30 years. They offer traditional taxi services and probably have one of the fastest car arrival times.
You can order a car through the app, the website, or by phone (they offer a nonstop hotline). You can also find out the approximate price of the ride before ordering the taxi, either in the app or on the website.Tariff prices are guaranteed, all drivers are licensed, and pricelists are displayed in the vehicle. Drivers must have the taximeter turned on during a ride and must issue a receipt upon request.
You can choose from many types of cars – regular, combi, luxury vehicles such as limousine, minivan, air-conditioned cars, cars with a baby seat, or even a driver with specific language knowledge (English, German, etc.). Every car offers WI-FI for free.

Tips for Taxi in Prague from a Local Insider
- If you want quality, polite drivers, good cars, and a licensed driver who knows Prague and will take you safely to your destination, choose Liftago or AAA Taxi.
- If you want cheaper prices, order Bolt or Uber. With Uber, you can also choose a shared ride, which makes the price even lower.
- Never take a taxi on the street. If you do, always agree on the price to the final destination in advance and ask for a receipt.
- Do not expect the driver to automatically speak English — many drivers in Prague do not speak English well.
- It is common to give the driver a tip in a taxi — usually about 10 to 20 percent. However, tipping is not mandatory. You should only give a tip if you are satisfied with the driver.
- Prices for Uber and Bolt are dynamic — they change depending on demand. If the price seems too high and you are not in a hurry, try waiting for a better price.
- Prices are usually highest during rush hour — in the morning and around 5–6 PM on weekdays, on Friday and Saturday evenings, during large events, on New Year’s Eve, or when the weather is bad. With AAA Taxi, prices are fixed, and with Liftago you can choose the cheapest driver. If you want to order Bolt or Uber, try to avoid rush hours.
- The Prague city authorities have set a maximum taxi price. You should use these prices as a guide: 36 CZK per 1 kilometer and a fix entry fee 60 CZK.
- Use promo codes. When you create an account in the app, you will often get a discount for the first ride or even several rides.
