Easter in Prague and the Czech Republic

Easter is an important holiday in the Czech Republic and one of the nicest time of year. For many people, it is less about religion and more about spring, traditions, and time with family.

A Rich History of Easter

Easter traditions in the Czech Republic go back to the Middle Ages. At first, people saw Easter as the end of winter therefore they welcomed spring, new life, and warmer days. Later, Easter became the most important Christian holiday. People went to church and joined religious processions.

In contrast, during the 20th century, things changed. During the communist period, religion was not allowed. As a result Easter lost much of its religious meaning and for most Czechs, it became a celebration of spring again. In fact, this is still true today thus it´s not surprising that only a small number of people visit churches or connect Easter with religion. Furthermore about 10% o people in the Czech Republic do not celebrate Easter at all.

For most families, Easter means spring cleaning, visiting relatives, and simple traditions as well. People paint eggs, bake sweet treats, and also decorate their homes. In villages, certain traditions are still very much alive, however in the bigger towns they start to fade away.

Main Easter Markets in Prague in 2026

Easter markets are a lovely Czech tradition and Prague hosts several beautiful ones. They are colorful, lively, and hence fun to visit.

What You Can Find at the Markets

The markets focus on traditional Czech products. You can buy hand-painted eggs, spring decorations, handmade ceramics, wicker and straw items, glass, jewelry, lace, embroidery, wooden toys..

Food is a big part of the experience and it is equally important. Try Czech specialties and Easter sweets like beránek ( lamb cake) and mazanec ( sweet bread)

The markets are full of spring colors. You will see blooming birch branches decorated with colourful ribbons. They symbolize new life and at the same time warmer days.

In 2026, Easter markets are open from March 21 to April 12. Entry is free.

Old Town Square ( Staroměstské náměstí) Market

This is the biggest and most impressive Easter market in Prague. You will find many wooden stalls with colorful decorations. There is also an outdoor stage with music and folk groups performing traditional dances. At the same time you can also watch craftsmen at work. Finally, both kids and adults can join craft workshops, like egg painting or making a traditional willow whip.

Opening hours: 10:00 am – 10:00 pm

Peace Square (Náměstí Míru) Market

This is one of the local easter markets, not right in the city center, but it is just as charming, full of easter decorations. As a result you will meet many locals here, not just tourists. You can get there easily by metro (Náměstí Míru metro station). You can also walk, it is not far from the Wenceslas Square.

This market is open until April 6 only, 10:00 am – 8:00 pm

Wenceslas Square ( Václavské náměstí) Market

This market is only a short walk from Old Town Square. It is smaller but still offers many food and craft stalls.

Opening hours: 10:00 am – 10:00 pm

Smaller Easter Markets

Kampa Square – ( Kampa) (next to Charles Bridge): 10:00 am – 8:00 pm

Mariánské Square: ( Mariánské náměstí) 11:00 am – 7:00 pm

Havel’s Market ( Havelské tržiště): 7:00 am – 7:00 pm

Opening Hours During Easter

Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays however in the city center, most places stay open. This includes restaurants, tourist attractions, and Easter markets of course. On Easter Monday, large shops (over 200 m²) must in fact close by law.

Traditional Czech Easter Food

You can try Easter food at markets or in restaurants with special easter menu.

Popular dishes include:

Veal, goat, rabbit, or duck (often with stuffing) and of course lamb

Spring soups, spinach, and fresh herbs

Easter sausages

Easter stuffing with nettles and herbs

Eggs in many different forms

Sweet Easter Treats

Beránek – a sweet cake in a shape of a lamb.
Almost every family has one. People decorate it with sugar, icing and red ribbons

Jidáše – small sweet yeast pastries with honey
They often look like knots or little animals.

Mazanec – a sweet Easter bread containing raisins and almonds

Boží milosti – fried pastries coated in sugar

Green Thursday

Tradition says you should eat green food for good health. Long ago, young women washed their faces in streams to stay beautiful. People also eat jidáše on this day.

Good Friday

Good Friday remembers the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. As a result churches hold services and processions. People also prepare Easter food at home. Old legends say that at 3:00 pm, mountains and rocks open and reveal hidden treasures. Traditions say you should not work with soil ( it reminds of digging a grave), wash laundry ( it would soak in Christ’s blood) and borrow anything ( it could bring bad luck)

White Saturday

This day is all about preparation. Of course, people bake cakes ( easter lamb cake and mazanec), paint eggs, and braid pomlázka from young willow branches. Eggs are the main Easter symbol. In fact they stand for spring and new life. For this reason women give them to carolers on Easter Monday. You can see decorated eggs and pomlázka at Easter markets.

Easter Sunday

Believers go to church in the morning, later families meet later for a festive lunch. People used to bless food and eggs in church, then families shared them together. Tradition says you should not clean or do laundry on this day and you should wear new or festive clothes.

Easter Monday

Finally comes Easter Monday, the most traditional day. In villages, small boys and men go from house to house with pomlázka (a braided willow whip). They sing easter carol and lightly whip women. In villages, small boys and men go from house to house with pomlázka (a braided willow whip). They sing easter carol and lightly whip women. In return, they receive painted eggs, ribbons, sweets, or a small drink. For many locals, it is a social event as neighbors visit each other and chat.

Many visitors find this tradition surprising. It may look strange, but it is not violent. In fact the whipping is symbolic hence willow branches are believed to bring health, luck, and youth. In the past, young men also used pomlázka to show interest in girls. Additionally ribbon colors had meaning: red meant love, blue hope, green friendship and finally yellow which showed no interest.

In some villages, people also splash girls with water. This old pagan tradition brings health and beauty. Also in some places, girls splash boys too.

If you are visiting Prague at this time, just walk through the markets, taste something sweet, and enjoy the city. Prague in spring has a special charm. We hope you enjoy your stay — and wherever you are spending the holidays, we wish you a happy Easter, lots of sunshine, and a beautiful start to spring

Prague has grown for more than a thousand years, starting as small settlements on the Vltava and slowly becoming the city we know today. The legends talk about Princess Libuše, but the real story begins with early tribes ( germanic and celtic), later joined by the Slavs who built the first foundations of the city in the 6th century.

Prague truly came alive thanks to its position on old trade routes. In the 9th century Prague Castle rose above the river, followed by Vyšehrad, and the city quickly became a lively place full of merchants and travelers.

The biggest transformation came in the 14th century, when Charles IV decided to make Prague the heart of his empire. He founded Charles University, built New Town and Charles Bridge, and filled the city with the Gothic landmarks that still shape its skyline.

Over time Prague became a mix of Czech, German, and Jewish cultures. The historic quarters—Hradčany, Malá Strana, Staré Město and Nové Město—were joined into one city in 1784, creating the Prague we walk through today, full of Baroque churches and elegant old streets.

The 20th century brought painful years: Nazi occupation, the loss of much of the Jewish and German communities, and decades of communism. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, the city opened up again and slowly rediscovered its cosmopolitan spirit.

Today Prague is a modern European capital, but still feels like a place where every corner remembers its past. It’s this mix of history, beauty, and ordinary everyday life that makes the city so easy to love.

Christmas in Prague fills the city with a magical Christmas spirit. The world-famous Old Town Square Christmas Market—makes the city one of the best places to spend your Christmas holiday. CNN, The Times, and US News & World Report have all listed Prague among the best Christmas markets worldwide.

This year, the Old Town Square market runs from late November (29 November 2025) to 6 January 2026, open daily from 10:00–22:00.

The sacristy showcases exotic nativity scenes donated by worshippers worldwide.

The Nativity Club’s annual exhibition—Nativity Scenes and Christmas Traditions—takes place in the Church of Our Lady of the Snows at Jungmann Square, featuring nearly 200 nativity scenes made from wood, dough, glass, ceramics, gingerbread, and more.

4. Christmas Exhibitions

Visitors eager for authentic cuisine can book a traditional Czech Christmas Eve dinner, often featuring carp and potato salad.

6. Gifts

The pre-Christmas period is ideal for finding presents for your loved ones. Besides regular shops, the Christmas markets offer handmade crafts and unique souvenirs. Typical Czech gifts include Bohemian crystal, garnet jewelry, wooden toys, and traditional puppets.

7. Light Parks

If you’re visiting Prague with children, don’t miss the city’s magical light displays, especially Lumina Park and Winter Wonderland, which feature fairy-tale-inspired installations. The Prague Zoo and Botanical Garden also host dazzling displays. For something unique, explore the interactive Signal Space on Rytířská Street.

8. Outdoor Ice Skating

Outdoor rinks open gradually in November. Popular spots include Karlín, Letná, and the rink under the Žižkov Tower. In the city center, enjoy skating at Na Františku or at the lower part of Wenceslas Square. Rentals are available on-site, making it a great choice even for beginners.

After skating, warm up with a hot drink and enjoy the festive atmosphere before heading back to your hotel.

Exploring the city of Prague, the enchanting capital of the Czech Republic, is one of the best things to do in Central Europe. Often called the city of a hundred spires, Prague is filled with famous landmarks and historical monuments, that make it one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Whether it’s your first time visiting or you’re returning for a closer look, you’ll quickly discover why its tourist attractions rank among the best places to visit. From the iconic Charles Bridge to the oldest building hidden in its medieval streets, from grand baroque buildings and elegant baroque style palaces to awe-inspiring churches in striking gothic style, Prague offers something unforgettable at every turn. The historic centre of Prague was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1992.

Old Town Square ( Staroměstské náměstí)

Old Town Square is the beating heart of Prague, full of history, culture, and energy. Located on the right side of the Vltava River, it has been a central meeting place for centuries. The square is surrounded by a mix of stunning buildings—from the towering spires of the Church of Our Lady of Týn to the elegant Baroque façade of St. Nicholas Church, and the historic Old Town Hall with its famous astronomical clock. This square has seen it all: bustling markets, grand celebrations, and even tragic events that shaped the city. Back in the 11th century, it was a major hub for traders traveling across Europe, making it an important center for commerce. Over time, it became the stage for both joyous festivals and darker moments in Prague’s history.Today, Old Town Square is a lively spot for both locals and tourists. Cafés spill out onto the cobblestones, street performers entertain crowds, and shops, galleries, and museums invite exploration. Walking through the square, it’s easy to feel the mix of centuries-old history and modern city life in one place.

The Astronomical Clock (Orloj)

Tucked onto the side of Prague’s Old Town Hall tower is the city’s iconic Astronomical Clock, a masterpiece that has fascinated visitors for over 600 years. The tower itself reaches nearly 70 meters (230 feet) into the sky. The clock was first built in the early 1400s and later refined by a master craftsman, whose story is surrounded by legend: it’s said he was blinded to stop him from creating another clock, but he reportedly sabotaged his own creation before passing away. The Orloj isn’t just a timepiece—it’s a show of art and science. Its main features include a dial tracking the sun and moon, a calendar with detailed month medallions, and the famous hourly parade of the twelve apostles. From morning until late evening, spectators gather to watch the tiny figures march across the clock, a tradition that draws crowds every hour.Visiting the Orloj is more than seeing a clock; it’s stepping into a piece of Prague’s history that continues to enchant visitors centuries later.

Charles Bridge ( Karlův most)

Charles Bridge is one of Prague’s most iconic landmarks, connecting the historic neighborhoods of Old Town (Staré Město) and Lesser Town (Malá Strana) across the Vltava River. Construction began in the late 14th century under Emperor Charles IV and was completed in the early 15th century during the reign of King Wenceslas IV.Originally called the Stone Bridge, it became known as Charles Bridge in 1870. Its sturdy structure helped establish Prague as an important trade link between eastern and western Europe. Today, the bridge is famous for its stunning Baroque statues that line the sides and is one of the city’s most visited spots, attracting photographers, street performers, and tourists from around the world.Walking across Charles Bridge offers not just views of the river and city but a step back into Prague’s rich history.

Prague Castle ( Pražský Hrad)

Perched on a hill overlooking the city, Prague Castle is like a small town of its own, filled with towers, palaces, churches, gardens, and museums. It holds the title of the largest ancient castle complex in the world and has been the seat of power for Czech kings, Holy Roman emperors, and modern presidents. The castle isn’t a single-style fortress—it grew over centuries, with each era leaving its mark. The first royal palace was established here in the 980s by Prince Bořivoj, making this hill a center of leadership and culture for more than a thousand years.Visiting Prague Castle offers a journey through time, showcasing layers of history, architecture, and the story of the Czech nation.

Nestled between Old Town Square and the Vltava River, Josefov is Prague’s historic Jewish Quarter. Its roots go back to the 10th century, and by the 17th century, thousands of Jewish families called the area home. Life here was often difficult, marked by persecution, fires, and plundering over the centuries. In the 18th century, Emperor Josef II brought important changes, tearing down the ghetto walls and improving living conditions—a reform that gave the quarter its name. Despite this, full civil rights weren’t granted to the Jewish community until 1848. The darkest chapter came during World War II, when the majority of Bohemian and Moravian Jews were deported and killed under Nazi occupation.Today, Josefov preserves its history through a collection of synagogues, including the oldest in Europe, and the old Jewish cemetery. The area now serves as an open-air museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich and sometimes tragic history of Prague’s Jewish community.
