As one of the oldest brewing cultures in the world, Czechs take their beer very seriously. Czechia also ranks among the countries with the highest beer consumption per capita. In traditional pubs, Pilsner Urquell, usually served with a thick head of foam, is a familiar sight.

If you want to experience the atmosphere of a traditional pub without attracting disapproving looks from the regulars, there are a few simple rules of etiquette worth knowing. Many tourists get into awkward situations simply because they do not know how things work in Czech pubs.

In tourist areas, you generally do not need to worry too much about these rules. Things can be very different, however, when you step into a traditional Czech pub away from the tourist crowds.

I put together this short and practical guide to help you navigate the experience, enjoy your beer, and avoid some of the most common mistakes.

General Czech Social Style

The first thing you should be prepared for, and what can often be a culture shock, is the rather cold behavior of waiters. Sometimes they can be blunt and unfriendly.

There are several reasons for this. First, Czechs are generally quite reserved, especially older generations. They may not like foreigners entering a typically Czech environment. Also, waiter jobs are often poorly paid, and it is difficult to find staff. Owners therefore cannot always be very selective when hiring employees.

Language & Communication

Do not automatically expect staff to speak English outside tourist areas. Assuming that everyone speaks English can come across as arrogant and will not earn you any points with the staff.

First, politely ask if the staff speaks English. Even better, learn a few Czech words, such as pivo (beer), dobrý den (hello/good day), and děkuji (thank you). Czechs always appreciate this effort.

  • Say hello when you arrive and goodbye when you leave.
  • Speak quietly and behave respectfully. Czechs generally dislike loud, overly familiar, or attention-seeking behavior.
  • Do not try to have long conversations with the staff. Small talk with strangers is not expected or appreciated.

Entering a Pub and Finding a Table

When you enter a traditional Czech pub, never move chairs or rearrange tables without asking first.

Also, never sit at an empty table with a “Rezervace” sign. This means that the table has already been reserved and someone will be coming to use it.

In busy traditional Czech pubs, expect to share tables with strangers. If you find a free table, someone will most likely sit next to you later. You can also do the same if you cannot find a free table.

In this case, it is polite to ask first: “Je tu volno?” This means “Is this seat/table free?”

Ordering A Beer

In a traditional pub, after you have found a free table (or shared one with strangers), simply sit down and put a beer coaster in front of you. Then wait for the server. There is no need to call or wave. They will come to you.

When the server comes, you can simply say “Pivo, prosím” (Beer, please). In most pubs, you will be served the main beer they have on tap, often Pilsner Urquell. If you want a different beer, specify which one.

Traditionally, some Czech pubs have one main beer on tap and may not offer a large selection of alternatives.

You do not even have to speak. You can simply make eye contact with the waiter and show with your fingers how many beers you want.

The waiter will bring the beer and place a paper slip on your table. They will mark each beer on the slip.

Never lose the paper slip or write or draw on it. You may be charged extra if you do.

One of the biggest differences for visitors is the automatic beer refill culture. The waiter may automatically bring you another beer without you ordering it. This continues until you put a coaster on top of your glass.

The coaster is the signal that you do not want another beer.

Finishing Your Beer

Ideally, do not order more beer than you intend to drink. Leaving an unfinished beer can be viewed negatively in a traditional pub.

If you have had enough, put the coaster on top of your glass. This is a sign to the waiter that you do not want another beer.

Paying & Tipping

First, always carry some cash with you when going to a traditional Czech pub. Especially outside tourist areas, payment cards may not be accepted.

When you are ready to pay, simply wave to the server after putting the coaster on your glass. You can also say “Zaplatím, prosím” (Can I have the bill, please?).

The server will calculate the total on your table slip and tell you or write down the amount. You then pay the server directly at the table.

In the Czech Republic, tipping is not obligatory, unlike in the USA. However, it is common and generally appreciated. A tip of around 10–20% is common, especially when the bill is modest.

Usually, people tell the server the total they want to pay before handing over the money. For example, if the server says 300 CZK, you can say “330 CZK” and pay.

If you do not speak Czech and the server does not speak English, you can simply leave the tip on the table with the payment slip and leave.

Good To Know

Beer Sizes

When ordering, you may be asked which size you want, particularly if you are a woman. Men are generally assumed to want a larger beer.

  • Velké = large, usually 0.5 L (about 1 pint)
  • Malé = small, usually 0.3 L

The Foam Is Part of the Beer

A traditional 0.5 L beer can have a noticeable layer of foam and still contain the expected amount of beer. You are not being short-changed!

This is how Czech beer is served. A thick head of foam is desirable. It shows good carbonation and helps preserve the character of the beer.

Don’t Mix Old and New Beer

When a fresh beer arrives, never pour the remains of your old beer into the new one. This is considered very poor etiquette in a traditional Czech pub.

Finish your old beer first, then enjoy the new one as it is served.

Self-Service in Beer Gardens

Large outdoor beer gardens can work differently from traditional pubs. Ordering beer is often self-service.

Generally, you need to queue at the bar or tap, order your beer, and pay right away. Then take your drinks and food to your table.

When you finish, you are usually expected to return the empty glasses and dishes to a designated area.

If you are not sure what to do, take a moment to observe the locals and follow their example.

🚫 Biggest Tourist Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don’t assume everyone speaks English.
  • Don’t be loud or overly familiar.
  • Don’t expect the waiter to make conversation with you.
  • Don’t wave aggressively to get service.
  • Don’t sit at an occupied table without asking “Je tu volno?”
  • Don’t move furniture without asking.
  • Don’t sit at a reserved table.
  • Don’t pour old beer into a fresh beer.
  • Don’t panic when you see lots of foam — it’s normal.
  • Don’t expect every traditional pub to have IPA, stout or dozens of craft beers.
  • Don’t assume you can pay by card everywhere.
  • Put the coaster on your glass when you don’t want another beer.
  • Don’t treat a traditional Czech pub like a tourist attraction — observe how locals behave and follow their lead.

Located in LETNÁ , this is the most famous beer garden in Prague. Sadly, it has become very popular with tourists in recent years. You can still meet plenty of locals here, though. Almost every Prague resident comes here with friends at least once during the season.

The atmosphere is very relaxed with plenty of tables.  You sit under large chestnut trees on wooden benches and drink cheap beer, including Pilsner Urquell. At the same time, you can enjoy incredible view of Prague skyline.

From here, you can see Prague Castle, the Old Town and the river with several bridges across it. The best view is at sunset.

In summer, you do not have to worry about the heat. The trees provide plenty of shade.

I would say this is probably the second most popular beer garden in Prague. Unlike Letná Beer Garden, you won’t see as many tourists here. Instead, you’ll find lots of locals and expats who live in Prague.

The beer garden doesn’t have a direct view of the city. But don’t worry! Just a few minutes away, there is an amazing sunset spot with beautiful views of Prague and Prague Castle. Grab a beer, walk up the hill, and enjoy the view. You can also bring a blanket and have a picnic at sunset. Many locals do this, especially in summer.

The beer garden is open from spring to autumn and serves Czech beer, including Pilsner Urquell. There is a big screen showing live sports, so it’s a perfect spot to watch football or ice hockey with friends. In summer, they also host outdoor concerts.

If you get hungry, you can order traditional Czech snacks, burgers, grilled meat, and other simple meals.

The atmosphere is made even better by the mature trees and, above all, its location on the banks of the Vltava River. From here, you have a great view of Prague Castle.

Large screens show important football and hockey matches. Concerts are also held here at weekends. Children are welcome too. There is a small play area for them.

NA SLAMNÍKU

Na Slamníku is one of the oldest pubs in Prague. It has been serving guests without interruption for centuries.

You will find it in Stromovka Park, close to Prague Castle. and most of the guests are locals. The pub has a large beer garden and a hall where concerts are regularly held. You can enjoy excellent Czech lager as well as craft and regional beers.

KLÁŠTERNÍ PIVOVAR STRAHOV (Strahov Monastery Brewery)

Just a short walk from Prague Castle, you will find a brewery in the grounds of Strahov Monastery. Beer has been brewed here for hundreds of years.

On a nice day, you can sit outside in their courtyard beer garden and enjoy its unique atmosphere. The whole place is full of history, and the beer is excellent. It is one of the best places to try authentic Czech craft beers in Prague. The place is also close to one of Prague´s most amazing views of Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, the Old Town, Petřín Hill and the skyline

It is not a traditional beer garden, but I have to mention it. Náplavka is one of the city’s most popular places to relax and have a drink by the Vltava River.

It is known for its lively atmosphere and mainly attracts younger people. You can relax with a beer, enjoy some street food and take in the great views of Prague Castle. The riverside is full of outdoor bars, cafés, beer stands, food stalls and boats. There is always something happening.

How to get there : Take Metro B to Karlovo náměstí (Palackého náměstí exit) or one of the many trams that stop at Palackého náměstí. From there, it is only a short walk to the river.

ŽLUTÉ LÁZNĚ

Žluté Lázně is the largest riverside beer garden and leisure area in Prague. Located on the banks of the Vltava River
, it is a great place to enjoy Czech beer good food and outdoor activities. You can relax by the water, play sports or simply enjoy the lively summer atmosphere. It is especially popular on warm evenings with both locals and visitors.

MLÍKÁRNA

Just a minute walk from the famous Energy Pub in Riegrovy Sady, you will find another lovely traditional beer garden, surrounded by trees. The yellow building has its own history. It was already a popular place to visit in the 18th century, although it was a pastry shop back then.

Today, you can enjoy Pilsner Urquell and Gambrinus. You can also try simple snacks, including grilled Hermelín.It is a great choice if you want to visit Riegrovy Sady but prefer a smaller beer garden.

DVA KOHOUTI (Two Roosters)

Prague’s historic cafés have played an important role in the city’s cultural life. They were once the favourite meeting places of writers, artists, scientists, politicians, and many famous people.

As a local host, I always tell my guests the same thing: don’t leave Prague without visiting at least one historic café. It’s an experience you simply won’t get in a modern coffee shop.

Most of these cafés are right in the city centre, so you’ll never be far from one while sightseeing. They’re the perfect place to take a break, enjoy a coffee, and soak up the atmosphere before continuing your walk around Prague.

Yes, some of the most famous cafés are popular with tourists. But don’t let that put you off. Many are touristy for a good reason—they’re beautiful, full of history, and truly unique. If you prefer quieter places, I’ve also included several hidden gems where you’ll mostly meet locals.

Some historic cafés serve excellent breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, while others are best known for their coffee and homemade cakes. Personally, I’d recommend having your main meal at one of Prague’s fantastic restaurants and saving the cafés for a leisurely breakfast or an afternoon coffee with a traditional Czech dessert or an open-faced sandwich (chlebíček).

Every café on this list offers something special. Some will amaze you with their stunning architecture, others with fascinating stories or famous former guests. Together, they offer a chance to step back in time and experience a side of Prague that many visitors miss.

And after all, how many people can say they’ve enjoyed a coffee in the same place as Albert Einstein?

CAFÉ SLAVIA

Café Slavia

Café Slavia is  Prague’s most famous historic café. Open since 1884, it has welcomed generations of artists, writers, musicians, and politicians. With its elegant Art Deco interior and beautiful views of the National Theatre, the Vltava River, and Prague Castle, it’s easy to see why it remains one of the city’s most iconic cafés.

For more than a century, Café Slavia has been at the heart of Prague’s cultural life. Famous guests have included composers Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana, writer Jaroslav Hašek, film director Miloš Forman, former Czech president Václav Havel, writer Gabriel García Márquez, and  Hillary Clinton.

Unlike most of Prague’s historic cafés, Slavia stayed open after the Communist takeover in 1948. Although its interior changed over the years, it remained a favourite meeting place for artists and intellectuals. After the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, it also became a well-known gathering place for political dissidents, including Václav Havel.

The café is a great choice at any time of day. Breakfast is served until 2 pm, and from 11 am you can enjoy traditional Czech and international dishes. Or simply stop by for a great coffee and one of the delicious homemade cakes.

CAFÉ LOUVRE

Café Louvre

Café Louvre is one of Prague’s most famous historic cafés. Located on the first floor of an Art Nouveau building on Národní Street, it welcomes guests with high ceilings, large windows, and elegant halls full of old-world charm.

The café is a great choice at any time of day. You can enjoy a traditional Czech, English, or French breakfast, excellent coffee, homemade cakes, or the classic afternoon tea served here every day.

Founded in 1902 and inspired by the grand cafés of Paris, Café Louvre quickly became one of Prague’s leading intellectual meeting places. Writers, artists, philosophers, and scientists gathered here to exchange ideas. Among its most famous regular guests were Franz Kafka and Albert Einstein, who taught at the German University in Prague during his time in the city.

The café was forced to close after the Second World War and stood empty during whole communist era. After a careful restoration, it reopened in 1992 and once again became one of Prague’s most beautiful and beloved cafés.

CAFÉ IMPERIAL

Café Imperial

Cafe Imperial is one of Prague’s most spectacular historic cafés. The elegant Art Deco exterior and the stunning Art Nouveau interior, covered with colourful ceramic mosaics, make it a place you won’t forget.

The menu focuses on traditional Czech cuisine with a modern touch, using fresh, high-quality ingredients. 

The building’s history dates back to 1383. After being destroyed during the Swedish siege of Prague, it was rebuilt in 1730 as the Black Eagle Hotel. In 1914, it became the Hotel Imperial, and the café quickly grew into one of Prague’s most fashionable meeting places. Famous guests included Franz Kafka, composer Leoš Janáček, and Czechoslovakia’s first president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. During the Second World War, the café became a popular meeting place for German officers stationed in Prague.

Like many of Prague’s historic cafés, Café Imperial closed after the Communist takeover in 1948. Today, it has been beautifully restored and is once again one of the city’s finest places to experience Prague’s grand café tradition.

GRAND CAFÉ ORIENT

Grand Café Orient

Grand Café Orient is unlike any other café in Prague. It’s located inside the House of the Black Madonna, one of the finest examples of Czech Cubist architecture. From the outside, the building may not look very unusual, but step inside and you’ll discover something truly special.

On the first floor, you’ll find the world’s only original Cubist café. It first opened in 1912 and was designed by the famous Czech architect Josef Gočár, who also designed the building. Every detail, from the furniture to the lighting, reflects the unique Cubist style.

The café closed after just ten years when Cubism fell out of fashion. It wasn’t until 2005 that it reopened, carefully restored to its original beauty.

Café Montmartre

Café Montmartre is a cosy little café hidden away on a quiet street in Prague’s Old Town. It’s easy to walk right past without noticing it. That’s one of the reasons it never gets too crowded and it´s a real hidden gem. Instead of tourists, you’ll mostly find locals, students, artists, and writers. Even former Czech president Václav Havel was a regular here.

The café first opened in 1911. It was founded by singer and cabaret performer Josef Waltner, who named it after the famous Montmartre district in Paris. At the time, Montmartre was known as the heart of the city’s artistic and bohemian life, and Waltner wanted to bring a little of that atmosphere to Prague.

Before the First World War, Café Montmartre became a popular meeting place for Prague’s creative community. Writers, artists, and actors came here to meet and exchange ideas. It was also a favourite of German-speaking authors, including Franz Kafka, Max Brod, and Franz Werfel.

After the First World War, the café slowly lost its popularity. It finally closed during the Second World War and remained closed for the next 50 years. Following the restoration of the historic building, Café Montmartre reopened and once again became one of Prague’s most charming cafés.

Beer has been brewed here for over 500 years without a break. The first written record of the brewery dates back to 1499.

The tavern is huge. It has eight traditional halls and a large outdoor beer garden. The historic interiors are decorated with wooden furniture and have a wonderful atmosphere. The tables are shared, and there is live music.

U Fleků brews its own dark beer and does not serve any other type. The menu offers traditional Czech dishes.

U Zlatého Tygra is one of the most famous beer pubs in Prague. Many Czech locals lovers and beer enthusiasts consider it a legendary place. It is located on Husova Street, just a short walk from Karlova Street.

Here you can enjoy one of the best tank Pilsner Urquell beers in the city. The menu offers simple Czech food. The local specialty is beer cheese. Prices are very reasonable for such a central location. Also, most guests are local regulars, while the rest are beer lovers from around the world.

Do not expect luxury. The interior is simple and traditional, with wooden furniture that seems frozen in time. The tables date back to the 1950s and they are shared with other guests. There is a vibrant atmosphere and often noisy. It can be difficult to find a table without a reservation, and you can only pay in cash.

The history of the building goes back to the 14th century. The first written record of the pub dates from 1816. In the 19th century, it was home to a patriotic café for several decades. However, at the beginning of the 20th century, it became a beer pub again. And it has remained one ever since.

Many politicians, actors, artists, and athletes have visited U Zlatého Tygra. The most famous regular was the Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal, who came here for many years. In 1994, U.S. President Bill Clinton also visited the pub. He sat in the back room with Czech President Václav Havel, future U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and Bohumil Hrabal. Bill Clinton drank three beers and ordered a schnitzel 🙂

U Pinkasů

Although U Pinkasů is popular with tourists, it is still one of Prague’s favorite beer pubs. It opened in 1843, and Pilsner Urquell has been served here ever since. It is the oldest restaurant in Prague where Pilsner Urquell is poured directly from the tank.

The pub is in the city center, just a short walk from Wenceslas Square. The interior is traditional and full of character. You will find a beautiful tiled stove, old photographs, and wooden tables.

The menu features traditional Czech dishes made from old recipes. During the summer, food is also grilled outside.

The real highlight is the outdoor seating area. It is located next to the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, in a quiet corner of the Franciscan Garden. It is one of the most beautiful beer gardens in the city.

U Medvídků is one of the largest and oldest beer halls in Prague. It is located in the Staré Město ( Old Town ), within walking distance of the city’s main attractions.

The brewery was founded in 1466 by Jan Medvídek. Beer was brewed here continuously until the end of the 19th century. Later, the brewery could no longer compete with large industrial breweries, so it was turned into a beer pub. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was also home to Prague’s first tingl-tangl cabaret.

Beer brewing returned in 2005. Today, the brewery serves excellent Budweiser Budvar 12° lager, both light and dark, as well as a range of craft beer. One of them is XBEER 33°, a dark lager that is said to be one of the strongest beers in the world. It is brewed using a unique medieval method.

U Medvídků offers a historic atmosphere, great beer, and traditional Czech food. You can also try specialties such as beer goulash and beer sorbet.

The pub has several dining halls, so it can be very lively and noisy. It is also popular with tour groups. The building is also home to a hotel and a beer spa.

The evening program includes a medieval-themed show with live music, jugglers, dancers, and staff dressed in period costumes. The vaulted ceiling with stone walls  are lit by candlelight, making the atmosphere even more special.

Be prepared to share large tables with other guests. Some dishes are also served to be eaten by hand, just as they were in the Middle Ages.

According to local legend, Czech kings visited the tavern in disguise through a secret passage from Prague Castle. It is also said that famous alchemists and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were among its guests.

Sometimes there is also live music.

Be prepared for a busy and noisy atmosphere. The pub is often full of people, especially tourists. Some guests have reported problems with bills, such as overcharging or incorrect amounts, so it is a good idea to check your bill carefully.

The pub is also interesting because, according to local stories, it was visited by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonín Dvořák. In 1965, the American poet and writer Allen Ginsberg also stopped here for a beer and a meal.

The pub serves excellent draft beer, especially Pilsner Urquell, as well as other Czech beers. The menu offers traditional Czech cuisine, including some dishes that are not easy to find in other restaurants. You can also order various light snacks to enjoy with your beer.

The kitchen focuses on fresh ingredients, and both food and beer can be ordered to take away. Prices are reasonable, and the historic vaulted cellars create a truly unique atmosphere.

Just a few steps from Prague Castle, on Loretánské Square, you will find a genuine Czech neighborhood pub. Most guests are local regulars, with only the occasional tourist.

For centuries, this has been a meeting place for locals, artists, and politicians. Before the Velvet Revolution, it was also known as a place where opponents of the communist regime met.

Inside, you will find long, worn wooden tables with benches, stone floors, and wooden ceilings. The pub serves Velkopopovický Kozel lager and dark beer, as well as Pilsner Urquell.

The food is very simple. You can order a few traditional beer snacks, but the main reason to visit is the excellent cheap beer and the timeless atmosphere. Prices are very reasonable. Keep in mind that the pub accepts cash only, and the staff may speak only limited English.

The history of the pub dates back to 1726, when there was already a tavern in this building. But the pub as we know it today opened in 1965. Since then, it has twice been close to closing, but each time it was saved by its loyal local regulars.

I have chosen a few historic Prague pubs/bars/taverns where time seems to have stopped. These are some of the longest-running pubs/bars/taverns in the city. Local people love them, and large tourist crowds have not discovered them yet.

Come here for a great Czech beer or to try traditional Czech food. The prices are usually very friendly compared with many places in the city centre.

Do not expect modern interiors. These pubs/bars/taverns are often simple, old-fashioned, and sometimes a little worn. But that is exactly part of their charm. This is what makes them feel authentic.

My advice as a local: do not expect perfect service. The service is usually typical for a traditional Czech pub/bar/tavern — simple, direct, and without unnecessary formality.

You should also know that English is not always spoken here. But with translation apps today, this should not be a problem.

And one important tip at the end: always bring some cash with you. Some of these historic pubs do not accept credit cards.

If you are looking for a real Czech pub in the heart of Prague, I always recommend U Rotundy. It is located in Prague Old Town,  just a short walk from Charles Bridge, but it feels very different from the busy tourist beer halls nearby. This one is definitely not a tourist attraction,

Nobody knows the exact year when the pub opened, but most likely in late 19th century. It has kept its original character over the years, and that is exactly why I like it. Do not expect a modern interior. The furniture is old, the walls show their age, and the whole place has a worn look. That is part of the charm of a traditional Czech pub.

The menu is simple and offers classic Czech dishes. The food is honest, tasty, and reasonably priced. The beer is also very good. They serve Staropramen 10°, Pernštejn 12°, and Černá Barbora 13°, so there is something for every beer lover.

The staff are friendly, and the prices are surprisingly affordable for such a central location. Even though you are in the middle of Prague’s Old Town, the atmosphere feels local and relaxed.

The only downside is that the pub is quite small. It fills up quickly, especially in the evenings, and reservations are not accepted. If you want to get a table, it is best to arrive early.

U Rotundy is one of the best traditional pubs near Prague’s historic centre. It offers exactly what many visitors are looking for: good Czech beer, honest local food, fair prices, and an authentic atmosphere.

Jelínkova Plzeňská pivnice , aka U Jelínků

Beer enthusiasts should not miss Jelínkova Plzeňská pivnice, also known as U Jelínků. I always recommend it to friends who want to experience a real old-style Czech beer hall. It is one of those places where time seems to stand still.

The pub is located in the heart of the city, Nové Město ( New Town ). I has a beautiful historic interior and a genuine local and vibrant atmosphere. Most of the guests are regulars, not tourists, which makes it feel even more authentic. The building is said to stand on part of an old Jewish cemetery, adding another interesting story to its long history.

The Jelínek family took over the pub in 1918, and in 1926 they signed a contract with the Pilsner brewery. Since then, U Jelínků has become one of the best places in Prague to enjoy cheap beer – specially Pilsner Urquell. Many people say it is served here better than almost anywhere else in the city. The beer is always fresh, perfectly poured, and topped with rich, creamy foam.

The pub also has a special place in Czech history. The famous writer Jaroslav Hašek was a regular guest here and wrote the first parts of The Good Soldier Švejk while sitting in this very pub.

The food is simple and traditional, but the menu is quite small. Come here for the beer rather than for a full meal. The prices are also very reasonable, especially considering that the pub is right in the city centre.

Because the pub is small and so popular with locals, it fills up quickly during the evening. Finding a table can be difficult, so it is best to come early if you want a seat.

U Jelínků is one of Prague’s hidden gems. It is the perfect place to enjoy one of the city’s best-poured Pilsner Urquell in a historic pub with real Czech character. If you are looking for an authentic beer experience instead of a fancy restaurant, this is a place you should not miss.

U Slovanské Lípy

If you want to see a real good traditional Czech pub, go to U Slovanské lípy in Žižkov. It is away from the busy tourist streets, so you will mostly meet Czech locals.

The pub has been serving beer since 1871, which makes it probably the oldest pub in Žižkov. The interior has a beautiful First Republic style. It feels rustic, old-fashioned, and full of character. Many people call it a hidden gem because it still has the atmosphere of old Prague.

The beer is one of the biggest reasons to visit. There are nine taps, with a great selection of Czech beers from breweries all over the country. You will always find classic lagers, but also rotating regional and craft beers, so there is usually something new to try.

The food is just as good. They cook traditional Czech dishes using fresh ingredients. The portions are big, the meals are well prepared, and the prices are very reasonable.

The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. It is a true neighborhood pub where locals come to eat, drink, and meet friends. If you want to experience Prague like a local, this is exactly the kind of place you should visit.

The pub is very popular, especially in the evenings and on weekends, so it can get quite busy. I recommend making a reservation if you can. Also, remember to bring cash because they do not accept cards.

For me, U Slovanské lípy is one of the best traditional Czech pubs in Prague. It offers excellent beer, honest Czech food, great value for money, and an authentic local atmosphere that is becoming harder to find.

Pivnice U Sadu

If you want to experience the famous pub culture of Žižkov, Pivnice U Sadu is a great place to start. It is one of the best-known pubs in the neighborhood, and it has been welcoming guests since 1929. Even after all these years, it has kept its old-fashioned charm and relaxed local atmosphere. It is a  popular locals’ hangout place. 

The interior is full of antiques and interesting old decorations. There is also several seating areas – a cellar bar with table football, and in the warmer months you can enjoy a drink in the beer garden. It is the kind of place where locals meet friends, watch sports, or stay for a long evening over a few beers.

Beer is one of the main reasons to visit. They usually have wide variety of beers on tap, including Pilsner Urquell, Kozel, and their own beer – unfiltered wheat beer called Sládek 11. There is always a good choice, whether you prefer a classic Czech lager or want to try something a little different.

The food is mostly traditional Czech, but you will also find some international dishes on the menu. The portions are generous, although the quality can be a little inconsistent. One thing I really like is that the kitchen stays open until very late—on some days until 4 a.m.. That makes U Sadu a popular place after concerts, nights out, or whenever you need a proper meal long after most restaurants have closed.

The pub is very popular, so it can be difficult to find a table, especially on weekends. It is usually busy, lively, and quite noisy. If you are looking for a quiet dinner, this may not be the right place. But if you enjoy the atmosphere of a busy Czech pub, you will probably feel right at home.

For me, Pivnice U Sadu is one of the classic pubs of Žižkov and one of my favorite pubs.  It combines good beer, generous food, late-night dining, and a friendly local atmosphere.

U Bansethů

U Bansethu

If you want to eat like a local, I always recommend U Bansethů. The pub is in the Nusle district, just a short metro or tram ride from the city centre. This really nice place first opened in 1911 and has kept the atmosphere of an old Prague pub ever since.

One of its most famous regular guests was the Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek. U Bansethů is mentioned in his famous novel The Good Soldier Švejk, and you can still see the table where he used to sit. It is a nice reminder of the pub’s long history.

The biggest reason to visit is the food and Pilsner beer. Their roast duck is legendary. The skin is perfectly crispy, the meat is tender and juicy. If you only order one thing here, make it the duck.

The beer is just as impressive. U Bansethů has held the Pilsner Urquell quality certificate for many years, an award given by the Pilsner brewery for outstanding care of its draft beer. Every glass is poured with great attention, and the quality is consistently excellent.

The atmosphere is exactly what I love about traditional Czech pubs. It feels authentic, relaxed, and unchanged by tourism. You will mostly see local people enjoying lunch or meeting friends over a beer. The prices are fair, and the whole experience feels honest and genuine.

For me, U Bansethů is one of the best traditional Czech pubs in Prague. It combines excellent Pilsner Urquell, unforgettable roast duck, fair prices, and over a century of history in a place that still feels like it belongs to the locals.

Na Slamníku

Na Slamníku

If you want to visit one of the oldest pubs in Prague, head to Na Slamníku. According to local stories, there was already an inn here in the Middle Ages. The first written record dates back to the mid-17th century, making it one of the oldest pubs in Prague that has been serving guests without interruption. Today, the building is protected as a Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic.

You will find Na Slamníku in Stromovka Park, not a long walk from Prague Castle. Even though it is close to one of the city’s biggest attractions, it still feels like a true neighborhood pub. Most of the guests are locals, and you will not see many tourists here.

The pub has several different spaces, including a traditional taproom, a private lounge, a large beer garden, and a hall where concerts are regularly held. Before the velvet revolution, Na Slamníku became an important meeting place for Prague’s alternative music scene. Even today, it continues that tradition by hosting concerts by young Czech bands.

The interior is full of character, with old wooden furniture and a fireplace that makes the pub especially cozy in winter.

The food is traditional Czech cuisine. The portions are generous, the prices are fair, and everything is made for people who enjoy honest local cooking. The beer is another reason to visit. You will find excellent Czech lager as well as craft and regional beers, so there is always something interesting on tap.

One thing to remember is that English is not widely spoken here. The menu and the service are aimed mainly at local guests. That is part of what makes Na Slamníku so special. It feels like a real Czech pub, not a place created for tourists.

For me, Na Slamníku is one of Prague’s true hidden treasures, one of the first pubs. It offers history, great beer, generous Czech food, live music, and an authentic local atmosphere that has survived for centuries.

Prague is full of famous sights, but nothing compares to the places that feel a little different. In this article, I’ve put together some unusual and offbeat attractions in Prague. Some of them you can easily combine while exploring the city centre, and some of them are completely free!

Idiom – Book Tower Installation

The Idiom sculpture is one of Prague’s most surprising modern artworks. You will find it inside the Prague Central Library on Mariánské náměstí in the Old Town.

It looks like a tall column made of around 8,000 books. The books form a tower from floor to ceiling. Inside, two mirrors create an illusion of endless space. When you look in, it feels like a tunnel that never ends. The installation is also called the “Column of Knowledge” or the “infinite well.” It was created by Slovak artist Matej Krén and has been here since 1998. It symbolizes the idea that knowledge has no limits.

You can only peek inside through a small opening, but that view is the key moment. Many visitors wait their turn because it is not just a photo spot—it is an experience. The effect can feel a bit dizzying, so take your time when looking in.

Hvězda Summer Palace

The Hvězda Summer Palace (Letohrádek Hvězda) is one of Prague’s most unusual Renaissance buildings. You will find it in the Hvězda Game Reserve (Obora Hvězda) in Prague 6 – Liboc, a large forest park with quiet tree-lined paths.

Emperor Ferdinand I of the Habsburg family founded the park itself as a royal hunting and resting area. At its center stands the summer palace, built in 1555–1556. Its shape of a six-pointed star is unique.

The palace has rich Italian stucco decorations with mythological themes. Inside, there is also an exhibition about its history and the famous Battle of White Mountain (1620), which happened nearby. You can see the model of the battle in the basement. After the battle, the area was destroyed and the forest was heavily cut down. Later, it even served as a gunpowder storage during the time of Emperor Joseph II. In the 19th century, both the park and the palace were restored.

Today, Hvězda is a national cultural monument. It is a peaceful place for walking, history, and nature, with a very unique architectural surprise in the middle of the forest.

The Narrowest Street in Prague

The narrowest street in Prague

The Narrowest Alley in Prague is a tiny passage in Malá Strana, close to Charles Bridge and the Čertovka canal.

It connects U Lužického semináře Street with the courtyard of a small restaurant by the water. The alley is less than half a meter wide, so only one person can pass at a time. Because of this, there is a traffic light to guide pedestrians.

The alley has a medieval origin. It once served as a fire escape route and a practical access path to the river area. Today, it is one of Prague’s most unusual curiosities.

It became popular thanks to social media, and now many tourists come just to experience this extremely narrow space. It is small, simple, and a bit funny, but very typical for hidden Prague.

The Smallest House in Prague

The smallest house in Prague

The Smallest House in Prague is a hidden curiosity in the Old Town. You will find it in Anežská Street, near the Convent of St. Agnes.

The house is only about 2.25 metres wide. It was built in 1853 by architect Josef Liebel. The goal was to fill a narrow gap between buildings, where a small passage once existed. At first, the space was just a small passage. Later, they turned it into rooms. For many years, the building even served as a brothel.

What you see now is mainly the front facade of the original house. Behind it is a living residential part. A small sign marks it as the “Smallest House in Prague,” and many visitors stop here for a quick photo.

Speculum Alchemiae

Speculum Alchemiae

The Speculum Alchemiae – Alchemy museum is one of the most mysterious places in Prague. You will find it in the Old Town, in Haštalská Street, inside one of the city’s oldest preserved houses.

This building survived the large demolition of the Jewish Quarter in the 19th century, which already makes it very rare. In 2002, there were major floods in Prague. During the reconstruction after the floods, workers discovered hidden medieval cellars and underground rooms beneath the house. These spaces are believed to be linked to the time of Emperor Rudolf II and his interest in alchemy.

The museum today shows a recreated alchemist’s workshop and tells stories about the search for the “elixir of life” and the philosopher’s stone. According to legends, famous figures such as Rabbi Löw and Edward Kelley worked in these spaces. One of the most fascinating parts is the underground. A secret passage leads into old tunnels that, according to legends, reach toward Prague Castle and the Old Town.

You will find the Lennon Wall on Velkopřevorské náměstí, just a few minutes walk from Charles Bridge, on the side of Kampa Island.

It is a constantly changing graffiti wall filled with John Lennon-inspired art, Beatles lyrics, peace messages, and modern street art. It started during the communist era as a symbol of freedom and expression, and it still keeps that spirit today.

It’s easy to combine with a walk around Charles Bridge and Kampa Park. The atmosphere is lively and colorful.

The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord is one of the most striking modern churches in Prague. You will find it on Jiřího z Poděbrad Square (Vinohrady quarter), and it is impossible to miss.

It was built between 1928 and 1932 by famous architect Jože Plečnik, who also worked on Prague Castle. The design is unusual and powerful. The shape was inspired by Noah’s Ark. The brick exterior gives it a strong and modern look, very different from traditional churches. The church tower is one of its biggest highlights. It is 42 metres high and holds the largest clock in the Czech Republic. The clock face is huge and clearly visible from far away. Inside, the church is calm and impressive. You will see a white marble altar and a large golden statue of Christ above it. There are also statues of Czech saints in the interior.

Today, the church is a national cultural monument and even a candidate for the UNESCO list. It is a great stop in Prague for anyone who likes architecture, history, and hidden city landmarks.

The Infant Jesus of Prague is one of the most famous spiritual sites in the city. The small wax-covered statue is over 400 years old and originally came from Spain. You can see it in the beautiful Baroque Church of Our Lady Victorious near Charles Bridge. Many people believe it has miraculous powers and visit it for protection and hope.

The statue shows Jesus as a child. He wears royal robes and a crown. One hand blesses visitors. The other holds a small globe with a cross. It is a calm and powerful symbol for many pilgrims.

The church itself is very beautiful and peaceful. The best bonus is the free museum upstairs. There you can see tiny crowns, robes, and gifts from worshippers. One crown was even blessed by Pope Benedict XVI. Even if you are not religious, the place is worth a visit.

I especially love the beautiful Baroque architecture. The Basilica of St. Margaret is one of Prague’s most impressive churches. The monastery gardens are free to enter. They are perfect for a relaxing walk.

Břevnov Monastery is also known for its brewing tradition. Beer has been brewed here since the 13th century. You can still taste local craft beer at the monastery brewery today.

The monastery survived wars, destruction, and decades of communist rule. It was returned to the Benedictine order after 1990. Today, it is an active spiritual centre. It is also one of Prague’s most interesting historical attractions. If you want to see a different side of Prague, Břevnov Monastery is well worth a visit.

You will also love the peaceful Pilgrimage Garden. It is full of flowers, herbs, trees, and shrubs. There are plenty of places to sit and relax. Since 2007, a community of Benedictine nuns has lived here. Their presence adds to the calm and spiritual atmosphere.

The area dates back to the 14th century. Most of the houses you see today were built in the 17th and 18th centuries. Many of them have unusual names such as The Golden Sun, The Golden Pheasant, and The Golden Lamb. Local residents gave their modest homes grand names to make them stand out.

Nový Svět has also been home to several famous people. The Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe lived here in 1600. The family of the celebrated Baroque architect Jan Blažej Santini also owned a house in the neighbourhood.

Today, Nový Svět remains one of Prague’s best-kept secrets. You will find quiet streets, beautiful historic houses, cosy cafés, and almost no tour groups. If you are looking for an authentic and peaceful side of Prague, this is one place you should not miss.

Karolinum

If you are interested in history, do not miss the Karolinum in Prague’s Old Town. This remarkable building has been part of Charles University since 1383. It is one of the most important university buildings in the Czech Republic.The building combines medieval, Baroque, and modern architectural elements. Its beautiful façade and elegant courtyard make it one of the most photogenic landmarks in the area.

Karolinum was originally a grand Gothic palace owned by a wealthy royal banker. It later became the seat of Charles University. For centuries, it served as a place for teaching, administration, and academic ceremonies.

The heart of the building is the Great Hall. Even today, it hosts student matriculations, graduation ceremonies, and important university events. The hall reflects the long academic tradition of Charles University, which was founded by King Charles IV in 1348.

The complex also includes an art gallery and a treasury with valuable historical collections. After your visit, I recommend stopping at the monastery brewery. You can relax with a traditional Czech beer while enjoying the peaceful surroundings and beautiful views.

If you are looking for one of the best views in Prague, don’t miss the TV Tower in Žižkov. The Žižkov Television Tower is the tallest building in Prague and one of the city’s most striking landmarks. It rises 216 metres above the city skyline and is visible from almost anywhere.

I always tell visitors to go up to the observation deck for a completely different perspective of Prague. The viewing platform sits high above the city and offers a full 360° panorama. On a clear day, you can see up to 100 km into the distance. One of the most unusual features of the tower is the famous giant baby sculptures by Czech artist David Černý. These oversized crawling babies climbing the structure make the tower truly unique and slightly surreal.

If you want to make your visit extra special, you can dine at the stylish restaurant Oblaca located high above the city or stay overnight in the exclusive One Room Hotel for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Old Jewish Cemetery in Žižkov is located in Mahlerovy sady in Prague 3, close to the Žižkov TV Tower. This historic site is one of the most important Jewish monuments in the city.

The cemetery was founded in 1680 as a plague burial ground for Prague’s Jewish community. Over time, more than 40,000 people were buried here, including important rabbis, scholars, and early Jewish entrepreneurs. One of the most famous graves belongs to Rabbi Ezekiel Landau, known as the Noda Bi-Jehuda. His tomb is carefully restored and attracts many visitors.

The cemetery was partly destroyed during the 20th century and later turned into a park area. Today, the preserved section is managed by the Jewish Museum in Prague and is open to the public again after restoration. Next to the cemetery, you can also find a powerful modern memorial made from old tombstone fragments. These stones were once used in pavement on Václavské náměstí and later returned to their original meaning. It symbolizes memory, unity, and respect for history.

If you love wandering through quiet corners of Prague, don’t miss Jánský vršek in Malá Strana. This small, steep street and tiny square branches off from Nerudova Street and feels like a step back in time. The area already existed around the year 1100, when a small settlement called Obora stood here with two early churches.

One of the most interesting stories is connected to Edward Kelley, the famous alchemist from the time of Emperor Rudolf II. He lived and worked here in the house “U Osla v kolébce,” which you can still find today and which now relates to Prague’s alchemy legends.Another important name linked to this place is Jan Blažej Santini, one of the greatest Czech Baroque architects, who is said to be buried nearby. The atmosphere of Malá Strana makes it easy to understand why artists and builders were inspired here.

Jánský vršek is a quiet dead-end street, so there are no crowds or traffic. If you are exploring Prague Castle and Nerudova Street, take a small detour here. It is one of those places where Prague feels truly authentic and timeless.

Emauzy (the Emmaus Monastery) is located near the river in New Town and offers a fascinating mix of medieval history, spirituality, and modern architecture.

It was founded by Emperor Charles IV in 1347 as the only Slavic Benedictine monastery of its kind in the Holy Roman Empire. It was created as a centre of learning, culture, and Slavic liturgy. Even reformers like Jan Hus studied here, which makes the site even more important in Czech history.

The monastery is closely connected to old manuscripts and illuminated books, including the famous Reims Gospel, which later became part of the French royal coronation treasury. Emauzy was a true intellectual hub of its time.

Over the centuries, the complex changed many times. It was Baroque, then Neo-Gothic, and later heavily damaged during an air raid in 1945. Today, the striking modern concrete towers above the church are a result of post-war reconstruction. They make Emauzy one of the most architecturally unusual sites in Prague.

I also love the peaceful monastery gardens. They were originally created in the time of Charles IV and are now slowly being restored. Today, they offer a quiet green space with plans for cafés, orchards, and relaxation areas.

Main Railway Station ( Hlavní Nádraží )

If you arrive in Prague by train, your first impression will most likely be Hlavní nádraží, the city’s main railway station. It is the largest and most important train station in the Czech Republic and one of the key transport hubs in Central Europe.

I always tell visitors not to rush out immediately, because the station itself is worth seeing. The highlight is the stunning Art Nouveau Fantova Hall and the Sloup Hall. Its elegant decoration, stained glass, and historic details make it one of the most beautiful station buildings in Europe.

In recent years, the station has been carefully renovated to restore its Art Nouveau beauty while improving services for modern travelers. Even international films have used it as a filming location thanks to its unique atmosphere.

If you are exploring Prague’s Old Town, I highly recommend visiting the Anežský klášter, also known as the Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia. It is one of the oldest Gothic complexes in Prague and one of the most peaceful places in the city centre.

The monastery was founded in the 13th century by Saint Agnes of Bohemia, daughter of King Přemysl Otakar I. It was the first convent of the Poor Clares in Central Europe and also included a male Franciscan community. This makes it a very important spiritual and historical site.

Walking through the complex, you can explore beautiful Gothic churches, quiet cloisters, and atmospheric courtyards. The whole area once played a key role in medieval religious life and even served as a burial place for the Přemyslid dynasty.

Today, the Anežský klášter is part of the National Gallery in Prague. Inside, you will find one of the most important collections of medieval art in Central Europe, including precious Gothic panel paintings and rare religious artworks.

If you are looking for one of the most surprising hidden gems in Prague, visit Na Kocourkách Street in Střešovičky.

The street is only about 150 metres long, but it looks like a different world. Small colorful houses are tightly packed together, often built directly into the rock. It feels just as charming as the famous Golden Lane, but without the crowds.

It originally grew as a working-class colony, not as a traditional village. Some of the houses date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, and the atmosphere still reflects their simple, historical character. Over the years, the area has also attracted artists, filmmakers, and musicians. It has been used in Czech films and is loved for its authentic and almost timeless atmosphere.

Minorite Monastery is one of the oldest Franciscan monasteries in Central Europe and has more than 800 years of history.

The monastery was founded after 1232 by King Wenceslas I, when the Minorites first arrived in Prague. Over time, it became an important spiritual and social centre. Even royal events took place here, including wedding celebrations of members of the Luxembourg dynasty.

One of the highlights is the impressive Gothic basilica, built in stages during the 14th century. It was once one of the largest churches in Prague, and it played an important role in royal ceremonies and state events.

Over the centuries, the complex changed many times. It survived fires, reconstructions, and political changes. After the monastery was closed in the 18th century, only part of the original complex remained, but it still preserves its unique atmosphere.

Today, visitors can explore beautiful Gothic arcades, Baroque halls, and peaceful courtyards. You can also see frescoes inspired by the life of St. Francis of Assisi and walk through spaces that once hosted kings and emperors. Since it has recently been opened to the public, the Minorite Monastery is still a bit of a hidden gem. If you are exploring Prague’s Old Town, it is definitely worth a stop.

Troja Castle is a beautiful Baroque palace, located near the Vltava River. It was built in the late 17th century as a summer residence for the noble Sternberg family. The design was created by architect Jean-Baptiste Mathey, inspired by Italian villas. The palace is famous for its grand central hall and richly decorated staircase with mythological statues. Inside, visitors can see large frescoes showing ancient myths and Habsburg history. The castle is surrounded by a formal French-style garden with fountains, statues, and terraces. Today, it is part of the City Gallery Prague and is open for exhibitions and cultural events.

Jindřišská Tower ( also called Henry´s Bell Tower ) is a historic bell tower in the center of Prague. It was built in the 15th century from sandstone blocks. The tower once served as a military watchtower during the Thirty Years’ War. Today, it is known for its golden clock with symbols of the Old and New Town of Prague. Inside, visitors can see exhibitions, seasonal nativity scenes, and a restaurant. A special highlight is the carillon with 10 bells, which can play music inside the wooden roof structure. From the small windows, there are nice views of the city.

Vyšehrad casemates are a system of underground military tunnels in the historic fortress of Vyšehrad. They were built in the 17th and 18th centuries as part of Baroque defensive walls. The tunnels are over 1 km long and were used for fast and hidden troop movement, as well as storage for weapons and supplies.

At the end of the system is the large underground hall called Gorlice. This space was used for military gatherings and storage. Today, Gorlice is famous for housing original Baroque statues from Charles Bridge. The site was restored and opened to the public in the 1990s and is now part of guided tours of Vyšehrad fortress.

Franciscan Gardens is a peaceful green park in the center of Prague, located between Wenceslas Square and Jungmannovo Square. It was founded in the 14th century during the reign of Charles IV as part of a monastery garden. The garden was used for growing herbs, fruits, and flowers by different religious orders, including the Carmelites and later the Franciscans.

Today, it is a quiet public space with benches, rose-covered arches, a children’s playground, and a fountain with a sculpture of a boy holding a shell. The garden also features modern art sculptures and decorative gates with religious motifs. It is open all year and offers a calm escape from the busy city streets of central Prague.

The Jerusalem Synagogue (Jubilee Synagogue) is one of the most beautiful and unique synagogues in Prague. You will find it in Jeruzalémská Street, close to the main train station.

It was built between 1905 and 1906. It was a replacement for older synagogues that were demolished during the redevelopment of Prague’s Jewish Quarter. The synagogue is named “Jubilee” in honour of Emperor Franz Joseph I’s 50th year of rule. The building mixes Moorish and Art Nouveau style. There are bright red and white stone stripes, decorative arches, and rich ornaments.

Inside, there is also a small exhibition about Jewish life in Prague after 1945. You can see lot of photos and documents from the post-war period. After restoration work in the 1990s, hidden Art Nouveau decorations were discovered under old layers of paint, making the interior even more special.

Today, the Jerusalem Synagogue is both a functioning place of worship and a hidden architectural gem that surprises many visitors walking through this quiet Prague street.

In the previous article, I introduced Prague’s most famous landmarks, such as Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and Old Town Square. Prague Landmarks: The Top Attractions for First-Time Visitors .If you are spending more than just a day or two in the city, there are many other places that deserve your attention as well. In this article, I’ll take you to some of Prague’s other must-see sights — from the peaceful paths of Petřín Hill and the romantic corners of Kampa Island to the historic Vyšehrad, Klementinum and much more. These are the places that help reveal a different side of Prague beyond the most popular tourist highlights.

Vyšehrad

Vyšehrad sits on a hill above the Vltava River and offers beautiful views of the city. It is also much quieter than the busy historic centre.

The first written records of Vyšehrad date back to 1070, although people lived here much earlier. It was once a royal castle and even served as the seat of the first Czech king, Vratislav II.

Today, visitors come to see the impressive Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, the old fortifications, and the famous Vyšehrad Cemetery. Many of the Czech Republic’s most important artists, writers, and composers are buried there. I also recommend visiting the Casemates. These underground tunnels were built as part of the Baroque fortress. They allowed soldiers to move safely through the fort and were used for military purposes. Today, you can walk through the tunnels and see several original statues from Charles Bridge. Vyšehrad was declared a National Cultural Monument in 1962 and remains one of the most rewarding places to explore in Prague.

Old Town Bridge Tower

The Old Town Bridge Tower is one of the most beautiful Gothic towers in Prague. It stands at the Old Town end of Charles Bridge and was built in the 14th century during the reign of Charles IV.

The tower was designed by Petr Parléř, the architect behind many of Prague’s most important Gothic landmarks. It served as both a defensive gate and part of the Royal Route, which Czech kings followed on their way to their coronation.

I always recommend climbing the tower if you have the time. After 138 steps, you reach a viewing gallery with fantastic views of Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, and the rooftops of the Old Town. The tower is also known for its rich stone decoration, including statues of Charles IV, and king Václav IV

Petřín Hill

Petřín Hill

Petřín Hill is a large green hill close to the city centre, but it feels far away from the crowds. I often recommend it to visitors who want to slow down and enjoy a different side of Prague.

Petřín is known for its beautiful parks, gardens, and orchards. In spring, hundreds of fruit trees bloom, making it one of the prettiest places in the city. The hill is also home to several popular attractions, including the Petřín Lookout Tower, which is often called a small Eiffel Tower. From the top, you can enjoy wonderful views across Prague. Other highlights include the Mirror Maze and the Štefánik Observatory.

Petřín has long been known as Prague’s most romantic spot. On 1 May, many Czech couples come here to kiss under the blossoming trees, following a local tradition. It´s worth visiting for the views, the peaceful atmosphere, or a simple walk in nature,

Dancing House

Dancing House

The Dancing House is one of the most famous modern buildings in Prague. I often recommend it to visitors who are interested in architecture. It was designed by Vlado Milunić and Frank Gehry and opened in 1996. Its curved shape looks like a dancing couple, which is why it is known as “Fred and Ginger”. The building stands on a site that was left empty for many years after the original house was destroyed during World War II. In 1996, the Dancing House won Time magazine’s Design of the Year award. In 2021, it was ranked as the 9th most beautiful building in the world. Today, you can visit the gallery, enjoy a drink or meal, and take in amazing views of Prague from the rooftop terrace.

Klementinum

Klementinum

Klementinum is one of my favourite historic places in Prague. It is the second largest building complex in the city after Prague Castle and has been a centre of learning and culture for centuries. The complex was founded by the Jesuits in 1556 and today it is home to the Czech National Library. The highlights of a visit are the beautiful Baroque Library Hall, often called one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, the Astronomical Tower with wonderful views over Prague, and the stunning Mirror Chapel, known for its rich Baroque decoration and classical music concerts. Another interesting fact is that weather measurements have been recorded here continuously since 1775, making it one of the longest-running meteorological stations in Europe. Famous visitors included Albert Einstein, who taught here, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who performed here during his time in Prague.

St.Nicholas Church

Church of St. Nicholas is one of the most beautiful churches in Prague and a landmark of the Malá Strana district. Its large green dome is easy to spot from many parts of the city. The church is considered one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Europe and is often described as the most beautiful Baroque building in Prague.

The church was built over several decades by three generations of architects from the same family. Inside, the space feels truly impressive. The huge dome rises almost 57 metres above the floor, creating the tallest church interior in Prague. Don’t miss the magnificent ceiling fresco, one of the largest in Europe, and the beautiful Baroque decoration throughout the church. Music lovers may also enjoy knowing that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart once played the church’s famous organ.

If you have time, I recommend climbing to the gallery. From there, you get a closer look at the frescoes and a wonderful view of the church interior. You can also visit the bell tower, which was once used by the communist secret police to monitor nearby foreign embassies. Today, it houses a small exhibition and offers lovely views over Prague.

The Estates Theatre

The Estates Theatre is famous for being one of the oldest theatres in Europe still in operation . It was built in the 18th century by Count František Antonín Nostitz as a theatre for the public. It opened in 1783 with a play by Lessing. The building is closely connected with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He conducted The Marriage of Figaro here in 1787. In the same year, his opera Don Giovanni had its world premiere in this theatre, written especially for Prague.

Later, the theatre became known as the Royal Estates Theatre. It also played an important role in Czech culture. In 1834, the play Fidlovačka was performed here, and the song “Kde domov můj” was heard for the first time. This song later became the Czech national anthem.

The theatre is still active today. You can see opera, ballet, and drama performances here. I especially like the Mozart productions, which fit the history of the place so well. The theatre was also used in the film Amadeus by Miloš Forman, which made it even more famous around the world.

Čertovka ( Devil´s Chanel )

Čertovka

Čertovka, sometimes called Little Prague Venice, is a small and very charming canal in Prague’s Malá Strana. It was created in the Middle Ages by the Knights Hospitaller to bring water to local mills. The canal flows between the Vltava River and a small island called Kampa, which was formed by this diversion of water.

It is only a short walk from Charles bridge, on the left side towards Malá Strana. The area feels quiet and almost hidden, even though it is in the city centre. One old water mill is still visible today, the Grand Priory Mill, and it gives the place a special historic atmosphere. The canal is very photogenic, especially from Charles Bridge, and the views are perfect for a short stop and a few photos. It is one of those small Prague places that many people walk past too quickly.

Kampa is one of the most charming places in Prague and a spot I often recommend to visitors. This small island lies between the Vltava River and the Čertovka canal in the heart of Malá Strana. It was created centuries ago when a water channel was built to power local mills, including the historic Grand Priory Mill, whose large water wheel can still be seen today.

Kampa is often described as the most mysterious island in Prague. Local legends say that water sprites, mermaids, and other magical creatures once lived here. Whether you believe the stories or not, the island has a special atmosphere that makes it a place you should not miss. In fact, a well-known travel website once ranked Kampa as the second most beautiful city island in the world, describing it as a place that looks “almost unreal.”

Today, Kampa is a wonderful place for a peaceful walk, a picnic, or simply a break from the busy streets of the city. The island offers beautiful views of the Vltava River, Charles Bridge, and Prague’s historic skyline. You will also find several popular attractions here, including the Kampa Museum, the famous Lennon Wall, and the giant Baby sculptures by Czech artist David Černý. The northern part of the island, along the Čertovka canal, is sometimes called Prague Venice because of its picturesque setting.

National Theatre

The National Theatre in Prague is one of the most important cultural buildings in the Czech Republic. It was founded in the 19th century by Czech patriots, and people from all over the country contributed money to build it. It was a true national project, supported by both rich nobles and ordinary citizens.

The theatre first opened with the opera Dalibor by Bedřich Smetana. Just two months later, a fire destroyed the roof, and it took two years to repair and reopen the building. The theatre you see today is a beautiful Neo-Renaissance landmark with rich decoration and many details on its façade. Statues and golden elements make it especially impressive in sunlight.

Inside, it remains an important stage for opera, ballet, and drama. The building also looks very different at night, when it is softly lit and reflected in the Vltava River. I always think it is one of those places where you really feel the pride and history of Czech culture just by standing nearby.

The Powder Tower

The Powder Tower ( Powder Gate ) is one of the most famous Gothic landmarks in Prague. It stands at the edge of the Old Town and was built in 1475 on the site of an older city gate. For centuries, it served as one of the main entrances to Prague. It is also known as the starting point of the Royal Route, the ceremonial path taken by Czech kings on their way to their coronation at Prague Castle.

I always recommend taking a closer look at the tower’s beautiful stone decoration. The façade is covered with statues of Czech kings, saints, and patron figures. If you don’t mind climbing stairs, you can walk up 186 steps to the viewing gallery. The views over the Old Town are well worth the effort. Inside, you can also learn more about the history of the tower and Prague’s medieval fortifications.

Despite its name, there is no clear evidence that the tower was ever actually used to store gunpowder, but the name has remained ever since.

Municipal House

Municipal House

The Municipal House (Obecní dům) stands on the site of the former Royal Court, once a royal residence from the 14th century.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the old Royal Court was demolished. Prague wanted a modern representative building. Construction started in 1905 and finished in 1911.

The building quickly became a symbol of Czech national pride. In 1918, important meetings took place here that led to the creation of Czechoslovakia. The independence of the new state was announced from the balcony. Later, the building hosted concerts, balls, exhibitions, and major public events. During the Velvet Revolution in 1989, artists and students also gathered here.

The Municipal House is one of the finest examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Prague. The exterior is richly decorated with sculptures and mosaics. Above the main entrance is a large mosaic showing the city of Prague. On each side stand two symbolic statues: “Humiliation of the Nation” and “Resurrection of the Nation.”

Inside, there are many halls and decorated rooms. The most important is Smetana Hall, used for classical concerts. There are also cafés, restaurants, and historic bars.

For its time, the building was very modern. It had lifts, ventilation systems, telephones, and other advanced technologies. It was one of the most sophisticated buildings in Central Europe.

Today, the Municipal House is still a living cultural centre and one of the most important landmarks in Prague.

The Church of Our Lady before Týn

The Church of Our Lady before Týn is one of Prague’s most famous landmarks.

Its two Gothic towers rise above Old Town Square and are among the most recognizable features of the city skyline. Although the church stands on the site of an older building, the present church was built mainly during the 14th and 15th centuries under the reign of Charles IV.

I always recommend stepping inside, as the interior is very different from the Gothic exterior. It is richly decorated in the Baroque style and contains several important works of art. One of the most interesting sights is the final resting place of Tycho Brahe – the famous astronomer. The church is also home to the oldest working organ in Prague, dating from 1673. If you have the chance to attend a concert here, it is a wonderful experience.

Despite being located in the heart of busy Old Town Square, the church has a peaceful atmosphere and is well worth a visit.

Ungelt

Ungelt

Ungelt, also known as Týn Courtyard, is one of the hidden gems of Prague’s Old Town. Just a short walk from Old Town Square, this peaceful courtyard feels like a different world away from the crowds. Its history dates back to the 12th century, when it served as a fortified merchants’ yard.

In the Middle Ages, every foreign merchant arriving in Prague had to stop here. They were required to declare their goods and pay customs duties before they could trade in the city. In return, they received royal protection. The name “Ungelt” is believed to come from the German phrase um Geld, meaning a payment or duty. At its peak, merchants from across Europe passed through these gates, bringing everything from fabrics and spices to metals, furs, and exotic goods.

Today, the courtyard is surrounded by 18 historic buildings in a mix of architectural styles. I always recommend taking a few minutes to wander through and enjoy the atmosphere. It is one of those places that many visitors miss, yet it offers a fascinating glimpse into Prague’s medieval trading past.

Wenceslas Square

Located in Nové Město, Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí) is one of the most important squares in Prague. It is long and wide, more like a wide boulevard than a traditional square. The square was originally called Horse Market. It was created in the 14th century during the time of the king Charles IV. In 1848 it was renamed after Saint Wenceslas. Today it is also a major commercial centre. There are hotels, shops, restaurants, cinemas, and offices all along it. It is one of the busiest places in Prague, both for locals and tourists.

Wenceslas Square is very important for Czech history. In 1918, the creation of Czechoslovakia was announced here. In 1989, during the Velvet Revolution, huge demonstrations took place here against communist regime. Václav Havel and other leaders spoke to the crowds from nearby balconies.

At the top of the square stands the National Museum, the largest museum in the Czech Republic. It was founded in 1818 and completed in 1890. It houses huge collections covering natural science, history, archaeology, and culture.

Loreta is a Baroque pilgrimage complex in Hradčany, just a few minutes from Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral. It was built in the 17th and early 18th century around a central copy of the Holy House (Santa Casa), surrounded by cloisters, chapels, and the Church of the Nativity of Our Lord.

The complex was founded by Benigna Kateřina of Lobkowicz and gradually completed with the help of leading Baroque architects, including the Dientzenhofers. The Capuchin monks still care for the site today.

The tower is famous for its carillon of bells. They first rang in 1695 and still play every hour. On Sundays and holidays, live performances can be heard.

Inside is the Loreta Treasury, with a large collection of religious art. The most famous piece is the diamond “Prague Sun” monstrance from the late 17th century.

Loreta is known for its quiet courtyard layout, regular symmetry, and calm atmosphere in contrast to the busy streets nearby.

Easter is an important holiday in the Czech Republic and one of the nicest time of year. For many people, it is less about religion and more about spring, traditions, and time with family.

A Rich History of Easter

Easter traditions in the Czech Republic go back to the Middle Ages. At first, people saw Easter as the end of winter therefore they welcomed spring, new life, and warmer days. Later, Easter became the most important Christian holiday. People went to church and joined religious processions.

In contrast, during the 20th century, things changed. During the communist period, religion was not allowed. As a result Easter lost much of its religious meaning and for most Czechs, it became a celebration of spring again. In fact, this is still true today thus it´s not surprising that only a small number of people visit churches or connect Easter with religion. Furthermore about 10% o people in the Czech Republic do not celebrate Easter at all.

For most families, Easter means spring cleaning, visiting relatives, and simple traditions as well. People paint eggs, bake sweet treats, and also decorate their homes. In villages, certain traditions are still very much alive, however in the bigger towns they start to fade away.

Main Easter Markets in Prague in 2026

Colorful Easter Eggs

Easter markets are a lovely Czech tradition and Prague hosts several beautiful ones. They are colorful, lively, and hence fun to visit.

What You Can Find at the Markets

The markets focus on traditional Czech products. You can buy hand-painted eggs, spring decorations, handmade ceramics, wicker and straw items, glass, jewelry, lace, embroidery, wooden toys..

Food is a big part of the experience and it is equally important. Try Czech specialties and Easter sweets like beránek ( lamb cake) and mazanec ( sweet bread)

The markets are full of spring colors. You will see blooming birch branches decorated with colourful ribbons. They symbolize new life and at the same time warmer days.

In 2026, Easter markets are open from March 21 to April 12. Entry is free.

Old Town Square ( Staroměstské náměstí) Market

This is the biggest and most impressive Easter market in Prague. You will find many wooden stalls with colorful decorations.There is also an outdoor stage with music and folk groups performing traditional dances. At the same time you can also watch craftsmen at work. Finally, both kids and adults can join craft workshops, like egg painting or making a traditional willow whip.

Peace Square (Náměstí Míru) Market

This is one of the local easter markets, not right in the city center, but it is just as charming, full of easter decorations. As a result you will meet many locals here, not just tourists. You can get there easily by metro (Náměstí Míru metro station). You can also walk, it is not far from the Wenceslas Square.

This market is open until April 6 only, 10:00 am – 8:00 pm

Wenceslas Square ( Václavské náměstí) Market

This market is only a short walk from Old Town Square. It is smaller but still offers many food and craft stalls.

  • Kampa Square – ( Kampa) (next to Charles Bridge): 10:00 am – 8:00 pm

Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays however in the city center, most places stay open. This includes restaurants, tourist attractions, and Easter markets of course. On Easter Monday, large shops (over 200 m²) must in fact close by law.

Tradition says you should eat green food for good health. Long ago, young women washed their faces in streams to stay beautiful. People also eat jidáše on this day.

Good Friday

Good Friday remembers the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. As a result churches hold services and processions. People also prepare Easter food at home. Old legends say that at 3:00 pm, mountains and rocks open and reveal hidden treasures. Traditions say you should not work with soil ( it reminds of digging a grave), wash laundry ( it would soak in Christ’s blood) and borrow anything ( it could bring bad luck)

White Saturday

This day is all about preparation. Of course, people bake cakes ( easter lamb cake and mazanec), paint eggs, and braid pomlázka from young willow branches. Eggs are the main Easter symbol. In fact they stand for spring and new life. For this reason women give them to carolers on Easter Monday. You can see decorated eggs and pomlázka at Easter markets.

Easter Sunday

Believers go to church in the morning, later families meet later for a festive lunch. People used to bless food and eggs in church, then families shared them together. Tradition says you should not clean or do laundry on this day and you should wear new or festive clothes.

Finally comes Easter Monday, the most traditional day. In villages, small boys and men go from house to house with pomlázka (a braided willow whip). Many visitors find this tradition surprising. It may look strange, but it is not violent. In fact the whipping is symbolic hence willow branches are believed to bring health, luck, and youth. In the past, young men also used pomlázka to show interest in girls. Additionally ribbon colors had meaning: red meant love, blue hope, green friendship and finally yellow which showed no interest.

In some villages, people also splash girls with water. This old pagan tradition brings health and beauty. Also in some places, girls splash boys too.
