Prague´s Hidden Historic Pubs to Taste Authentic Czech Beer

I have chosen a few historic Prague pubs/bars/taverns where time seems to have stopped. These are some of the longest-running pubs/bars/taverns in the city. Local people love them, and large tourist crowds have not discovered them yet.

Come here for a great Czech beer or to try traditional Czech food. The prices are usually very friendly compared with many places in the city centre.

Do not expect modern interiors. These pubs/bars/taverns are often simple, old-fashioned, and sometimes a little worn. But that is exactly part of their charm. This is what makes them feel authentic.

My advice as a local: do not expect perfect service. The service is usually typical for a traditional Czech pub/bar/tavern — simple, direct, and without unnecessary formality.

You should also know that English is not always spoken here. But with translation apps today, this should not be a problem.

And one important tip at the end: always bring some cash with you. Some of these historic pubs do not accept credit cards.

U Rotundy

If you are looking for a real Czech pub in the heart of Prague, I always recommend U Rotundy. It is located in Prague Old Town,  just a short walk from Charles Bridge, but it feels very different from the busy tourist beer halls nearby. This one is definitely not a tourist attraction,

Nobody knows the exact year when the pub opened, but most likely in late 19th century. It has kept its original character over the years, and that is exactly why I like it. Do not expect a modern interior. The furniture is old, the walls show their age, and the whole place has a worn look. That is part of the charm of a traditional Czech pub.

The menu is simple and offers classic Czech dishes. The food is honest, tasty, and reasonably priced. The beer is also very good. They serve Staropramen 10°, Pernštejn 12°, and Černá Barbora 13°, so there is something for every beer lover.

The staff are friendly, and the prices are surprisingly affordable for such a central location. Even though you are in the middle of Prague’s Old Town, the atmosphere feels local and relaxed.

The only downside is that the pub is quite small. It fills up quickly, especially in the evenings, and reservations are not accepted. If you want to get a table, it is best to arrive early.

U Rotundy is one of the best traditional pubs near Prague’s historic centre. It offers exactly what many visitors are looking for: good Czech beer, honest local food, fair prices, and an authentic atmosphere.

Jelínkova Plzeňská pivnice , aka U Jelínků

Beer enthusiasts should not miss Jelínkova Plzeňská pivnice, also known as U Jelínků. I always recommend it to friends who want to experience a real old-style Czech beer hall. It is one of those places where time seems to stand still.

The pub is located in the heart of the city, Nové Město ( New Town ). I has a beautiful historic interior and a genuine local and vibrant atmosphere. Most of the guests are regulars, not tourists, which makes it feel even more authentic. The building is said to stand on part of an old Jewish cemetery, adding another interesting story to its long history.

The Jelínek family took over the pub in 1918, and in 1926 they signed a contract with the Pilsner brewery. Since then, U Jelínků has become one of the best places in Prague to enjoy cheap beer – specially Pilsner Urquell. Many people say it is served here better than almost anywhere else in the city. The beer is always fresh, perfectly poured, and topped with rich, creamy foam.

The pub also has a special place in Czech history. The famous writer Jaroslav Hašek was a regular guest here and wrote the first parts of The Good Soldier Švejk while sitting in this very pub.

The food is simple and traditional, but the menu is quite small. Come here for the beer rather than for a full meal. The prices are also very reasonable, especially considering that the pub is right in the city centre.

U Slovanské Lípy

If you want to see a real good traditional Czech pub, go to U Slovanské lípy in Žižkov. It is away from the busy tourist streets, so you will mostly meet Czech locals.

The pub has been serving beer since 1871, which makes it probably the oldest pub in Žižkov. The interior has a beautiful First Republic style. It feels rustic, old-fashioned, and full of character. Many people call it a hidden gem because it still has the atmosphere of old Prague.

The beer is one of the biggest reasons to visit. There are nine taps, with a great selection of Czech beers from breweries all over the country. You will always find classic lagers, but also rotating regional and craft beers, so there is usually something new to try.

The food is just as good. They cook traditional Czech dishes using fresh ingredients. The portions are big, the meals are well prepared, and the prices are very reasonable.

The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. It is a true neighborhood pub where locals come to eat, drink, and meet friends. If you want to experience Prague like a local, this is exactly the kind of place you should visit.

Pivnice U Sadu

If you want to experience the famous pub culture of Žižkov, Pivnice U Sadu is a great place to start. It is one of the best-known pubs in the neighborhood, and it has been welcoming guests since 1929. Even after all these years, it has kept its old-fashioned charm and relaxed local atmosphere. It is a  popular locals’ hangout place. 

The interior is full of antiques and interesting old decorations. There is also several seating areas – a cellar bar with table football, and in the warmer months you can enjoy a drink in the beer garden. It is the kind of place where locals meet friends, watch sports, or stay for a long evening over a few beers.

Beer is one of the main reasons to visit. They usually have wide variety of beers on tap, including Pilsner Urquell, Kozel, and their own beer – unfiltered wheat beer called Sládek 11. There is always a good choice, whether you prefer a classic Czech lager or want to try something a little different.

The food is mostly traditional Czech, but you will also find some international dishes on the menu. The portions are generous, although the quality can be a little inconsistent. One thing I really like is that the kitchen stays open until very late—on some days until 4 a.m.. That makes U Sadu a popular place after concerts, nights out, or whenever you need a proper meal long after most restaurants have closed.

The pub is very popular, so it can be difficult to find a table, especially on weekends. It is usually busy, lively, and quite noisy. If you are looking for a quiet dinner, this may not be the right place. But if you enjoy the atmosphere of a busy Czech pub, you will probably feel right at home.

For me, Pivnice U Sadu is one of the classic pubs of Žižkov and one of my favorite pubs.  It combines good beer, generous food, late-night dining, and a friendly local atmosphere.

U Bansethů

If you want to eat like a local, I always recommend U Bansethů. The pub is in the Nusle district, just a short metro or tram ride from the city centre. This really nice place first opened in 1911 and has kept the atmosphere of an old Prague pub ever since.

One of its most famous regular guests was the Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek. U Bansethů is mentioned in his famous novel The Good Soldier Švejk, and you can still see the table where he used to sit. It is a nice reminder of the pub’s long history.

The biggest reason to visit is the food and Pilsner beer. Their roast duck is legendary. The skin is perfectly crispy, the meat is tender and juicy. If you only order one thing here, make it the duck.

The beer is just as impressive. U Bansethů has held the Pilsner Urquell quality certificate for many years, an award given by the Pilsner brewery for outstanding care of its draft beer. Every glass is poured with great attention, and the quality is consistently excellent.

The atmosphere is exactly what I love about traditional Czech pubs. It feels authentic, relaxed, and unchanged by tourism. You will mostly see local people enjoying lunch or meeting friends over a beer. The prices are fair, and the whole experience feels honest and genuine.

For me, U Bansethů is one of the best traditional Czech pubs in Prague. It combines excellent Pilsner Urquell, unforgettable roast duck, fair prices, and over a century of history in a place that still feels like it belongs to the locals.

Na Slamníku

If you want to visit one of the oldest pubs in Prague, head to Na Slamníku. According to local stories, there was already an inn here in the Middle Ages. The first written record dates back to the mid-17th century, making it one of the oldest pubs in Prague that has been serving guests without interruption. Today, the building is protected as a Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic.

You will find Na Slamníku in Stromovka Park, not a long walk from Prague Castle. Even though it is close to one of the city’s biggest attractions, it still feels like a true neighborhood pub. Most of the guests are locals, and you will not see many tourists here.

The pub has several different spaces, including a traditional taproom, a private lounge, a large beer garden, and a hall where concerts are regularly held. Before the velvet revolution, Na Slamníku became an important meeting place for Prague’s alternative music scene. Even today, it continues that tradition by hosting concerts by young Czech bands.

The interior is full of character, with old wooden furniture and a fireplace that makes the pub especially cozy in winter.

The food is traditional Czech cuisine. The portions are generous, the prices are fair, and everything is made for people who enjoy honest local cooking. The beer is another reason to visit. You will find excellent Czech lager as well as craft and regional beers, so there is always something interesting on tap.
